TWENTY ONE

ALTHEA

Kylen spoke words that she wanted to throw up. He spoke with such ease about her that she could not help but imagine plunging this miraculous sword of such magick through his heart. How delicious that would be.

She could feel the magick; it was settling, soothing. Like a melody a mother would sing to their sick child. It was sweet, soft, but no matter how settling it was, it would never be able to stop the gruesome thoughts that echoed through her soul. “Well, if you are taking Sayah away, then I need a teacher,” she stated as a matter of fact. “Care to fight?” she questioned, with a sly grin of her own. “I mean, I know that you have little magick, closer to none. But I think this will really help me settle in with my new magick.”

She was making a mockery. Out of not only him but her magick too, because no matter what she did, she knew that it would never feel natural, it would never be one with her. Althea swung the sword around and through the air, testing the weight of it as she watched him with a tilt of her head.

Kylen hesitated, but she could see the sly grin of his own pushing the edge of his lips. “Alright, but I must say I won’t go easy on you.”

Althea shrugged, her sword reflecting the light of her soul in the process. It was a challenging light, one that pushed colours into her vision that she did not know the meaning of. “I wouldn’t expect you to.”

She stepped back, and Kylen stepped onto the floor outlined in white. He reached behind him, grabbing at the air. For some unthinkable reason, she had doubted that his magick was going to respond because she could sense the little that he had, and she knew that it was extremely weak. It was weak and afraid.

Kylen pulled up an all-black sword, one that glowed with red, one that seemed too like the weapons back in Aeonia, the palace that no longer felt like a home to her.

He lunged for her, his sword flying where her body had been just a second ago. She ducked back, using her years of training for not only battle but ballet to her own advantage. Her back bent, arching so that she could dodge his efforts. Her head flew back, and her braid slipped against the floors before she was back on her feet, death in her eyes.

Kylen watched; his sword placed before him as a spark began to shine within the darkness of his eyes. “I see that you have some hidden abilities there.”

“You’ve always known about them; I showed you the last time. But you were just too blinded by your own plans to take notice.” Althea started for him again with her own sword, the tip of her blade just nudging the skin on his chin. He stepped back quickly, and with a loud crash, the two blades powered by magick met.
